Little Geronimo are a Jacksonville-based five piece that fuses a menagerie of genres including modern day pop, indie, post-hardcore, and arena rock. This fusion is eclectic and infectious, at times reminding me of the more emotive bands on Blue Swan Records without some of the needless guitar wankery that often is associated with them.

The band’s sound is the exact midpoint between accessible and experimental, putting huge choruses and vocal patterns front and center with cathartic splashes of guitar and drums interspersed throughout. To a casual listener, they might sound like an indie-rock group with an added flair but if you pay attention you can feel the culmination of their influences permeate the songwriting.

Speaking of songwriting, their debut EP, “Kingdoms,” showcases tight and fun songwriting. The instrumental palette is atmospheric with hints of energetic stop-start guitar patterns, pulling you in at every turn and refusing to let go. The vocals are impassioned and commanding but have a lot more variation than a your average post-hardcore or indie rock vocalist, again leaning on key theatrical elements. The slick drum fills and smartly placed samples make for an even more engaging listen.

Little Geronimo take that post-hardcore base and bolster it with elements that elevate it above the sound routinely found within the genre. For instance, there are elements of drama and theatricality that would appeal to those who don’t normally pay attention or care about post-hardcore tropes, allowing the band to experiment and pull listeners from multiple different angles.

In short, if you haven’t given this EP a listen, make sure you check it out and follow Little Geronimo on socials before my continued coverage later this week. This is a band that’s going to take the world by storm sooner rather than later and I’m excited to have a front row seat.

Orlando based indie-folk artist Chris Dryfoos released his politically charged anti-Trump single “The Tower,” on July 25th. Clocking in at a little less than 7 minutes, this track laments the issues of our current political climate including but not limited to: police violence, racism, descrimination, the failings of our government and political system, Donald Trump, and war.

The only instrumentation on this track is a discreet folky guitar melody that is simple but effective. The energy rises and falls with the subject matter and serves to elevate Chris’ vocals and put them in the spotlight. His soulful and smoky timbre is utilized to great success in bringing the lyrics to life and giving them color that wouldn’t have been present under the guise of a less skilled vocalist.

While I don’t want to point any specific lyrics out because I think you should check the track out for yourself, I will say that Chris has a way of expressing the discontent and restlessness of people young and old that are tired of regression and violence. He does a good job at illustrating the division of people who have differing beliefs. His lexicon is poetic and metaphorical in a way that is thought provoking and engaging.

If you’re looking for a song that perfectly sums up the current American experience, check out “The Tower” and I guarantee that you’ll be a little bit more sad but a lot more empowered. This track is a deep and introspective dive on what it means to live in the United States right now and I highly recommend you give it a listen.
