The Beat Brothers band are an eclectic and soulful pop-rock band from Florida with talent bursting at the seams. This talent presents itself firmly on the sleeves of the band members on their newest single, “Tell Me”. This track is a mid-tempo mishmash of fun concepts and sounds. The base layer of the song is smooth and soul-inspired layered vocals that dominate the mix and are front-and-center. For good reason too, as the vocals are demanding and have a dynamic range that reaches an impressively high register. The lyrical content is your typical love-stricken affair but does a good job at conveying the emotions that the band are trying to present.
This soulful ballad is accompanied by guitar and bass, which are present but reserved. The instrumentals are dialed back a little bit to give the vocals room to breathe with the exception of some soothing guitar passages that lend an almost tropical feel to the song. The simple guitar melodies do well to accent the song but inclusion of more intricate basswork would have added an extra layer of groove that I think would have been to the benefit of the track. That being said..where the bass lacks, the inclusion of keys, synths, and horns pick up the slack and add an interesting wrinkle in terms of texture. While there isn’t an abundance of the elements previously mentioned, they do a good job at lifting the track above the sum of its parts. The drums don’t provide a standout performance but they add a solid backbone to the track that keeps things moving along at a steady clip. In the future, I’d love to see them experiment more thoroughly with fills.
Overall, this track reminds me a bit of a song that you would hear on the radio in the 90s. Not a knock by any means, this song takes a tried and true formula and spices it up with new and interesting elements. The most compelling thing in my opinion is the overall vibe of the song and how the laid-back delivery is permeated by soul elements. This song would be a perfect addition to any “beach” or “car ride” playlist, as it never fails to elicit a chill and relaxed energy that is undoubtedly infectious. I can’t wait to see what the band have cooking up with their forthcoming third record in terms of bass and drum variation because the vocals and aesthetic are on point.
